Does anyone know why God is sometimes referred to as "The Big Cheese"? Have heard this term on The Simpsons among other sources, but can't place its' origin.

It’s just a common synonym for a Very Important Person.
I don’t think there is any particular origin.
You have the big cheese….big enchilada…big shot… big kahuna…big name….high muckamuck…. top banana… head honcho…. the bossman amongst many many others.

I prefer, "The Big Lie in the Sky". Not sure where that one came from either . . . D'oh!
