I suppose either could be true but how would we know?

People have had "out of body" experiences during operations, found themselves floating above their own bodies.
One person later described to hospital staff how he/she could read the name on a folder that had been placed on top of a cupboard in the operating room.
The staff went to look on top of the six foot tall cupboard and found a folder that had been missing for a few days, and sure enough, the name on it tallied with the story.
The person who had the "out of body" experience had been lying unconscious when getting wheeled in and out of the op room.

well, the ones people have while actually dying don't count because they are no longer around to tell us. So the term is used for people who come back to life unexpectedly to say what they experienced. The experiences vary quite a bit, and some, such as theone Theland mentions, are hard to give 'rational' explanations for

Except to prove that there IS life beyond, perhaps.

I'm undecided as to the nature of NDEs, I saw one programme on the subject and it likened it to looking out of a window in a lit room as night drew in. The contention was that as the body dies it's lack of sensation in other patrs forces the brain to reflect within itself, or maybe they are ascending to heaven for judgement.
Personally we'll none of us know until it's too late (ask Thomas Marley!) it's validity and reality can only be decided by the plaintiff to their own satisfaction.
I'm more interested in whether people who have had NDEs used the experience to change their lives or live it morre towards a good and selfless end, helping humanity and creation?
If you die and are revived but don't have an NDE, does that mean your soul is toast?
