Just watching some old pop vids on (Theland's) television. I know that generally speaking, christian will reject as demonic, bands such as Black Sabbath, Megadeath and other heavy metal artists but what about more subdued pop music? Would you christians be happy listening to cliff richard singing devil woman while rejecting anything by Queen because one of its members was gay? What is the christian (or muslim for that matter) attitude towards pop music?

Most Christians probably look upon 'demonic' music with the derisary glance that one should take. The whole thing was kicked off by Alice Cooper back in the 60s as a purely tongue-in-cheek image that was taken seriously by idiots such as Marilyn Manson et al. Rebelling against your parents Christian ideals may've sold records 30 years ago but in todays increasing secular society I'm not sure what place this type of music holds.
Christians have always been a soft target for parody as they are unlikely to react violently towards the artist. TBH i'd give more kudos to a band who fancied having a crack at Allah - they wouldnt dare!
I've heard that alot of bands have used the more captive audience Christian music scene to catapult their careers into the mainstream. Evanescance being a classic example. The band is quick to denounce any kind of religious standpoint in their music now they've 'made it'.
I guess as a Christian your choice of music depends on how fundamental you are about the whole thing.

There is quite a lot of Christian 'pop' music and worship music that very pleasnat on the ear, but someof it like other types of music is a bit naff!
I do not personally like music that has 'demonic' lyrics or which advocate or encourage lewdness, violence, etc.
There are plenty of subjects to chhose from without lyricists scraping the barrel in order to try to shock. We are not shocked, but not entertained either, and that should be the point.
Personally, I love the innuendo of that great genius, George Formby. 'The Wedding Of Mr Wu,' a classic!

If jesus was walking the earth now would he have the occasional listen to The Wedding of Mr Wu ?

black gospel music is about as hip as it gets. alot of artists considered cool would've grown up in around that enviroment and had their earliest experiences of music within a church enviroment. Lauryn Hill does a mean 'His eye is on the sparrow' !

Mercy mercy me! I've listened to Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" religiously over and over again a thousand times and still love it. But then, I'm none of the above.

I am not religious but I like to think that I have a fairly gentle and forgiving nature so would practise chritian ethics without being god-fearing. However I really like the so called demonic artists like Megadeth, Marilyn Manson etc. I just happen to prefer that type of music.

Perhaps it is more a matter of taste.
Personally I’d rather listen to Judas Priest’s Sin After Sin than anything squirting from the demonic wailing banshee that is Mariah Carey.

"The whole thing was kicked off by Alice Cooper back in the 60s as a purely tongue-in-cheek image that was taken seriously by idiots such as Marilyn Manson et al."
I disagree with you. Marilyn Manson doesn't take it seriously at all and he's not an idiot either, whatever one thinks of his music (I'm not a fan myself). He's just Alice taken to the nth degree. Manson is an arch manipulator of people's paranoias and his entire character (and it is a character) is the fears of conservatives made flesh. That anyone can get riled over such an obviously cartoon character seems quite silly to me (particularly when one can change channel if one objects that much), but clearly many people apparently think he's their nightmares come to life and will corrupt society. Meanwhile he's laughing all the way to the bank.

I believe it is the media which perpetuates this myth with the routine/annual report on kids who listen to music backwards and kill themselves or listen to demonic music and then go out and shoot up a shopping mall.
I also believe it is the same people who report that children as young as 1 (etc) watch violent films and play violent video games, tend to grow up to lead violent anti-social lives.

I was just wondering, if jesus was on earth today, would he attend a pop concert? If he would, then who? (apart from Cliff, obviously). I suppose W.A.S.P. would be out of the equation, but what about Chris de Burgh or Showaddywaddy?
On a more serious note, would he give a f*ck about any pop group and if not why do you?
WWJD........

I'd rather listen to Puccini - and perhaps Jesus would too. Good for the soul.

My favourites are baroque, and George Formby of course.

George Formby? Aha! Your past has caught up with you, Theland. Go on, tell us. You were a 'Wild Child' weren't you?!

Quite wild. "Peace, man."

I grew up in the sixties, but hardly remember them!

I always imagine Jesus to be a bit of a Woodstock fan, you know hippies, flowers in the hair etc etc. He wojuld probably quite like Jimi Hendrix and is probably chatting to him right now, or listening to him ....er ....live (so to speak).

Yes, Octavius, I imagine him to be a bit like that too. Must be the hair. :o)
