What Is Proof ?

I asked a large group of theists how they know /prove that God exists and their bottom line answer was always the same . " The fact that we, and the universe exists at all is proof that he does ". Simple really ! There is nothing further to discuss !

I usually get the reverse argument:
"Faith is about believing in what can't be proved. If we could prove that God exists then there could be no faith"
I've tried arguing that the person making that statement appears to making 'faith' more important than God himself, which surely contradicts the idea that nothing is greater than God, but I might as well be knocking my head against a brick wall!

Proof of existence is not proof of cause of existence. There's a tree in my garden, but that doesn't prove how it got there. There could be many different explanations for the way it got there, accidental or deliberate. Same goes for the universe. But you can't prove any of the possible explanations.
The more one understands the means and process by which things came to be . . . the less one needs to invoke the supernatural as a supposed explanation for what is. 'God' is a smokescreen behind which those unwilling to acknowledge their own ignorance seek refuge. Simply believing has never contributed to an improved and enriched understanding.
The greatest proof that the Bible really is from God is its perfect record in foretelling the future. Unlike human oracles, God truly knows the future; everything he says always comes true.
Proof that Jehovah’s Witnesses are not athiest, for they share the Biblical view of the early Christians, namely, that the holy spirit is God’s active force, which he uses in many ways to accomplish his will. (Acts 5:32).
The fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses have been successful in “defending and legally establishing” the good news is another proof of support from Jehovah’s mighty hand. (Phil. 1:7) Some governments have tried to stop the work of God’s people completely. But when we look back and see that Jehovah’s Witnesses have received at least 268 high-court victories, including 24 cases won in the European Court of Human Rights just since the year 2000, it becomes clear that no one can hold back God’s hand.—Isa. 54:17
Mankind’s history you can see if you let your see it—Jehovah God let men go the way they chose, either to put faith in him or not. Yes, waiting is an unavoidable fact of life. But it does not have to be a constant source distress for you. For those who are awaiting the outworking of God’s promises, it a source of joy.
Because it fill the time spent waiting by cultivating a close relationship with God and doing works that demonstrate their faith. And by prayer, study, and meditation, they can cultivate an unwavering confidence that everything God has promised will happen in his due time, not by what Wikipedia say.

I had a very religious friend some years ago who lost one and a half fingers on his hand in an accident and for about ten years he asked numerous congregations and friends to pray that they would regrow . He wrote to the Pope and various Archbishops for help and did receive many letters of support , but without success.
Why not ? According to the bible everything is possible, if you believe strong enough.
If the miracles of Jesus are to be believed, then growing a couple of fingers is nothing .
Subsequently my friends wife died from cancer despite his fervent praying.
However despite these failures he never lost his faith and the last I heard of him he was still praying as hard as ever.

Beliefs (no less arbitrary beliefs) have consequences. It's not just that some (if not most) people believe in a god but in a God of a specific nature with specific desires and demands of His subjects that has not only stymied but reversed the intellectual development of humanity for millennia. The question of whether or not a god exists and the nature of that god is a crucial question upon which the future progress of humanity rests in the balance. We had better get it right.
