I do beleive that this is my first posting in this section .

It does appear to be very heated in here at times - in fact one could almost do without the central heating being turned on .

It also appears that most of the ' discussions ' seem to be between those in one corner who beleive in a higher being who created the universe and those in the opposing corner who do not beleive in any higher being - but rather that the universe came into existence at the big bang - i.e before that there was nothing .

Is that about right ?

pretty much
That about sums it up.

I've no idea why folk can't just believe or not believe. Why do they spend so much time telling the "opposing side" that they are wrong?

I don't venture in here much because of it.
Yep.
correct bazile

As to your central heating analogy, may I suggest that the thermostat is indeed warm in here, being turned more to the "Hell" end of the spectrum and hence closer to the ovens.
I only ever come in here to keep warm!
If you plan to stay you could do worse than get a sturdy crash helmet and a stab proof vest. It can get rather heated at times.
there was something before the big bang but it wasn't this universe
There are those extreme opinions, sure, but as far as I can figure, a "big bang" start to this universe doesn't preclude a God of some sort either causing it directly, or being responsible for the conditions where it can occur naturally, or even being responsible for an infinite number of conditions around where "big bangs" can happen in some.

As for before the "big bang", try the science forum. That is a subject of debate in itself. Maybe it is the start of one universe in a muiltiverse, or maybe it's a reboot of an old one that was already "around".
My theory is that if you believe in any God then he/she/it exists FOR YOU. If you don't, then that's what's right for you.
There was a woman on the radio yesterday who actually believed the Garden of Eden Adam/Eve story!
My Granny doesn't believe in dinosaurs.
They are a bit inconvenient, aren't they 2sp?
She thinks that scientists planted the bones and fossils to disprove the bible. Seriously.

She's bonkers, but it's up to her if she wants to think that.
I wonder how the Pope explains them.

Why is that so unsual ?

That is the christian belief .
I wouldn't presume to speak for His Holiness but he might say that the 6 days of creation weren't necessarily periods of 24 hours.
Sandy, I wouldn't speak for my employer but he might suggest a pound isn't necessarilly a sum of 100 pence.

I don't think I'd let him get away with that either
Welcome Bazile.
spot on really.
Ask your local clergy, Bazile.

I don't think many of them believe the Adam and Eve story literally.

Anyone who does is totally ignoring the evidence of evolution.
