String on a tombstone

Can anyone enlighten me as to what a piece of string tied around a tombstone in a Syrian graveyard signifies or represents?

I'd guess it's a bit like the small stones that people leave on Jewish graves. Something to show that the grave has recently been visited and that the deceased has been remembered
