Reading another thread made me wonder does Islam have nuns or the equivalent and what do they call them ?

Nuns aren't just closeted away in convents.
Many work as missionaries, as nurses in war zones, as teachers all over the world, run hostels for destitute people of all faiths or no faith, provide refuges for battered women, provide 'soup kitchens' for all and sundry....

Actually hc, you're absolutely right. I've known some nuns who've done some brilliant work. Apart from any of the others, I shall be eternally grateful to an extremely kind and compassionate nursing nun called Sister Josephine for helping me get through a very difficult birth.

And of course not all nuns are Roman Catholic.

I can think of at least one that sponsors suicide bombers but I imagine that they have such sad narrow and oppressed lives that they don't give up much at the end.

keyplus - i'd rather have a religion that asks me to give up a few things, like marriage etc - than give up my life, (wars, suicide bombers etc ) and possibly my freedom, by coercing me to commit murder...and give up my self respect and humanity by encouraging me to commit atrocities like stoning, female circumcison etc etc

To tamper with the question a little, I think Islam ought to have nuns, and then maybe they could rein in their holy men with a good tongue lashing.
Get them to paint the kitchen instead of ranting themselves into hysteria.
A duck egg blue would be nice.
