Seeing the reports of the French election , I wonder why we have elections on a Thursday.
Many schools are used a polling stations and will need to shut on a Thursday in the middle of the exam season for this next election. I remember how happy we were as kids to hear of an election as it meant a day off school.

Thursday is the day when people who've been on the lash over the weekend start to feel really good as they look forward to the weekend again.
We have two elections coming up here. County Council in May, then the General in June, when GCSEs will be in full flow. I see no reason why schools have to be closed and used for polling stations. Most towns and even villages have halls and other appropriate places that can be utilised. Would it cost more to be on a Sunday?

Interesting link Gangesboy thanks, so it's the pubs and the Church to blame ?

I think Sunday is chosen by many countries as it is the quietest day with schools etc that are used for voting closed anyway and most people off work. Gangesboy's link say's UK elections can be held any day EXCEPT a Sunday, so it's probably the church to blame for that as well.
Who wants to waste valuable weekends voting for someone who doesn't care what you want anyway ? Get it over and done with sometime during the working week.

probably. most modern European states are secular, france included, whereas the UK has a state religion, whose representatives sit in one of the parliamentary houses.
In my neck of the woods payday was always Thursday so the husband could give the missus her housekeeping to go shopping on Friday. My school used to host elections but didn't close; we were just banned from the school hall for the day.
