Nothing is ever simple in the Royal Navy. See here for the regulations: http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/-/media/royal-navy-responsive/documents/reference-library/br-3-vol-1/chapter-67.pdf

Thanks everyone, I am just sorting out my late Dads diaries which he kept all through the war and right up to his death, unfortunatly some pages have fallen out and gone missing, so I am trying to fill in a few details as I wish to publish a few copies for the family, he ended the war as CPO, he also told us he was acting Captain on one occasion when the captain was ill, and he took part in the Icelandic crossings, I want the Grand children to know what he did.
