I am doing a small assessment in class where I've to design or redesign a handheld product for IKEA. I have decided to Re-design Salt and Pepper shakers.

In terms of some Desk Research, I want to know: From an Aesthetics point of view, what do you think an "organically" redesigned salt and/or pepper shaker should look like? The answer is completely open ended and can be as personal as you wish, that would actually be beneficial! :)

I like a traditional design... the 'lighthouse' shape in glass....I also am not thrilled with not being able to see which is which instantly ..... easy clean too... nothing worse than a grubby condiment set! Sigh... really boring as I age....apologies !!
I don't use shakers but grinders both for salt and pepper. I would like an easy to work mechanism, variable grind, easy to clean and some kind of attached cover for the bottom to keep wherever it is stood clean.....maybe the cover could open automatically as you start to grind?
I'd like one in the form of Angela Merkel with the top section portraying her head, I could then relish wringing her neck; oh I'd love that!
Like Woofgang said, I'm a grinder rather than a shaker.....
So if our views are at all widespread, what you're left with is salt n pepper shakers as novelty items
I love Khandro's notion of novelty characters

This is all great stuff, keep it coming! (And that Angela Merkel one though XD)
The nicest I've ever used were in business on American Airlines, we blagged an upgrade, they were a clear Perspex cube about 3 cm. Very tempted to "lose" them but they ostentatiously checked when collecting trays, so glad I hadn't "lost" them. Otherwise, we too use grinders, would like a variable grind and a non-clog mechanism, please.
