A young private in the trenches suddenly finds the hell too much for him, watching his mates die one after another. He throws down his weapons and starts running away from the Front, running until falling down exhausted, and now being well out of hearing of the raucous sounds of battle, falls into a sleep.

On awaking he sees in front of him a pair of highly-polished officer's boots, and hears a voice coming from above, "What are you doing here ?"

"Oh dear, I'm sorry Major", says the private, I couldn't take any more of the carnage, the shelling, the bullets, and the gassing - it was terrible so I just turned and ran and ran. I'm sorry Major, really sorry."

"I'm not a major", says the voice, "I'm a General."

"Blimey", says the private, "I didn't think I'd run that far".

LOL LOL.
Love it and so true
?? :-\
The running joke in WWI is that the higher your rank, the further back your were from the trenches. The generals were reputedly 30-odd miles back in luxurious French mansions; for the purposes of the joke Majors are presumably in a village five miles or so from the front line.
