They often don't believe what is written in their holy book and they don't follow its guidance.

I know many so called Christians that I would not trust, have virtually no morals etc but they still call themselves Christians. Maybe this because they were Christened or baptised into this religion, is that enough to be able to call yourself a Christian.

Personally I am more likely to put my trust in an Atheist!

as far as i know, the bible doesn't dictate morals in the 21st century. OK, so it's a while since i read it but i'm sure it isn't a manual on how to live your life
I certainly hope that the OT isn't.
Thanks - appreciate it!
And Christians that have never read the bible.
As an atheist i dont have this problem, and yes you can trust me
I think people say they are Christians, Muslim etc because they believe in something and dont want to be considered an atheist but they dont follow their 'faith' IYSWIM?

'Trust me' I'm an Atheist.
When I spoke to a catholic priest before my husband's funeral as I wanted things changed in the service (we have/had our own beliefs), he told me we can't believe everything which is written in the Bible. So there you go...!!!!
I was taught that in school.

ojread2, Exactly my point, Atheists at least have the courage to stand up and and be counted and not hide under a false set of rules and lies.

Most Atheists are actually very proud to be an Atheist, I would be ashamed to say I trust and follow the teachings of the Bible.

Baldric, I really want to trust you, but that avatar............ lol
Mrs Zeuhl who is also an atheist was brought up in a catholic family and claims to have met in childhood, catholic priests who were atheists

e.g." now you know it's all nonsense and i know it's all nonsense but please come to church to make your mammy happy"

Go figure!
They possibly say it because they were brought up in a household that claimed to be of that religion: and because they believe in that religion's teaching on reality and how to live a good life, even if they don't wish to practice the mumbo jumbo or grind their way though the ancient texts.

If they fail to try to live up to the standards demanded of their religion, as far as being a good person is concerned, and/or do not accept the belief of it's greater spiritual reality, then they are under a misapprehension, and are not the religion they believe themselves to be.

OG, so you are saying they are hypocrites?
Question Author
2shortplanks, I agree with you in general.
There are many who were christened so call themselves Christians
I'm definitely not an atheist so what do I call myself?
Question Author
OJ, that depends on your stance, you havent made that very clear, not being an Atheist does not make you a Christian. Im assuming that just being christened doesnt make you a Christian? I may be wrong in some peoples eyes I may be right.
