ID for 18 year old

my son is 18 on tuesday and wants to out in town on thursday with his friends - it's student night (hope he doesn't bump into paul calf!).
He says he will take his passport 'cus he wil need id. There's no way he is taking his passport out!
Can he use his student card?
Where do we get other id from amd how much do you have to pay?

My 19 YO daughter tells me that the proof of age cards aren't accepted at most places as they are too easily bought therefore a driving license or passport is more readily accepted but I can see your concerns.

if you know the club he wants to go in why go down with his passport before the day explain it is his birthday and you do not want him to carry his passport around on the night

get the manager to ok it and then the door staff/ bar staff will know he is old enough

He really needs to take his passport on the night out, if he doesn't he won't be able to get served at the bar even if he manages to get into the club in the first place. Tell him if he loses it he has to pay to replace it himself.

ID cards seem quite acceptable when one is required to possess one to buy intoxicating liquids, time has come for everyone to possess an ID card.

It's either driving license or passport like others have said. Just warn him that if he loses it, he has to pay for a replacement! That'll make him more careful ;)

And I think speaking to the bar is silly. I'm sure they wont stay in the same place all night so he will have to show it on more than one occasion.

crikey crisgal.. bit of a over reaction don`t think sidkid said anything offensive. probably have a go at me now, but I think if my son considers himself to be old enough to go drinking, then to also be responsible enough to manage to bring his passport home is not unreasonable.
