I bumped into an old school friend recently - apparently we were in the same form - he was talking about some of our mutual friends from school.

I must've had a blank look on my face because he cottoned on to the fact that I didn't recognise him - I tried to cover the fact that I didn't recognise him by talking about our mutual friends of the time.

Even though, apparently, we spent 3 years in the same form, I had absolutely no recollection of this person at all - even his name didn't ring a bell.

Has this sort of thing ever happened to anybody else?

Yes but not face-to-face. I had a "friend" request from an individual on both Friends Reunited and Facebook. I had no idea who he was but he knew details from my teenage years that I'd forgotten myself. Other friends confirmed that he was who he claimed to be so I'd apparently "deleted" him.
No, but only because I haven't met anyone from my old school. I do know there are loads of names on Friends Reunited I must surely have known but simply draw a blank from my memory bank.
I get lots of friend requests and suggestions on facebook and because of our mutual friends on there I know they must have been people I went to school with but I can't remember them at all.
Yes. I went to a school reunion and was greeted joyfully by several people I had no recollection whatsoever of - not even when others tried to jog my memory. :o/
I saw a guy standing at the bar and thought I recognised him as someone I knew from way back but couldn't quite place him. Before I had the chance to fully recall, he walked past with his drinks, saw me and with a flicker of recognition in his eyes, came over and started enthusiastically reminiscing. After a couple of minutes of listening to him I remembered... until he asked me if I was still in touch with 'X', a mutual friend. I then realised he wasn't actually who I thought he was at all: I thought he was 'X' when actually he was someone else from the same crowd...
sure, an old colleague (15 years ago) hailed me by name in the street the other day. I didn't recognise him (he's got a bit plumper), but he forestalled any embarrassment by identifying himself immediately, which is what sensible people would do.

I on the other hand obviously haven't changed a bit in 15 years, which is why I am proudly recounting this story.
Yes....

We were out one night and a bloke came over to our group and everyone was greeting him. I turned to my other friend and asked who he was. He explained...but I had no memory of him. Even when I was told we used to go round with him at school and he used to come to my house on a regular basis, I still had no memory of him. I'm friends with him now but nothing has jogged my memory from before I was introduced to him again...
