In the short time I have been on this site, I have found that many people believe the lies that are told about God. These lies are usually perpetrated by the very ones who are supposed to teach us.
The most common lies are:
God is a mystery
Does not care about us
Is vengeful
Is unfair
He accepts all worship.
Of course there are many more which will no doubt raise their ugly heads during the course of this discussion.

I agree Boo, wholeheartedly
I think personally we should all respect what one another believes, but tempers get frayed and people get ruffled around the boa when other people try to tell them what to do and what to believe. Whilst I know that there are a few militant atheists about by and large that sort of response sits fairly and squarely in the court of the religious fundamentalists, like the one who posted this question 'raise their ugly heads' being a perfect example of the way they speak to anyone who doesn't adhere to their version of things. I try to live a good and humane life, but I am not a Christian and therefore according to them destined for hell. Well how fair is that then eh?
fair is fair nox. hell don't exist so i wouldn't worry.
It would be a lie to claim that people prefer to believe lies about God. Why should I believe that lie ?
Morning,

Throw mud at greenhouses built on sand if you must (that's how it goes right?) but lets be civil and avoid childish name-calling.
I cant help calling it all a "stupid nonsense" look at the facts:

Oh no, there aren't any!

in my opinion it is just a savage fairy story that some people like to believe.

Its just opinions.
Opinions are fine ratter, we're all entitled to them, but i do resent being called a div for having mine.
I don't think people need so scathing in their tone. I dislike oranised religion massively and have been an atheist for years. Two of my best friends are religious. We can discuss our respective opinions and there is often some teazing but I've never felt the need to call them names for their chosen belief. Ultimately, if it's a comfort to someone and helps them live a good life not bothering others then leave 'em to it, they're not harming anyone. Sometimes I think the athiests that get so rallied up about it actually have a lot more unresolved issues with religion than they would like to admit to.
Joanelle - as you can see I was using the second conditional to refer to god. I love the responses Christians give regarding praying. If you get what you want it's god helping you and if you don't it's god's will. Completely takes the point out of praying really, doesn't it?

"a load of divs" is not a collective term for christians. BOO appears to have taken mine and RATTER's comments personally.
"I think the athiests that get so rallied up about it actually have a lot more unresolved issues with religion than they would like to admit to."

i would tend to agree.
of course i took it personally, you called me and others like me who believed divs! How else are we supposed to take it?
China Doll, //Sometimes I think the athiests that get so rallied up about it actually have a lot more unresolved issues with religion than they would like to admit to.// [sic] Perhaps you would like to give some kind of example or explanation?
I am confused that my answer was removed.
I think you're more than capable of providing my examples for me Ratter. I notice you (and others) get very angry and emotive. I don't see the point. Yes, this particular poster is a prat (sorry Ed but they are) but only because they're trying to force their own beliefs on others. BUt someone who goes quietly about their business, belives in God, takes some form of comfort from it, and doesn't try and force it down your neck is not doing this athiest any harm and I refuse to get up on my high horse about it as it's just not my business.

Also, I think the aggressive and occasionally condescending attitute of some athiests (not actually thinking of anyone particular on here but rther someone I know at work) don't do themselves any favours. And it can come across as judgemental when alot of athiests I know seem to prize themselves on being non-judgemental... which is a bit strange when they are clearly judging others.

Just leave people be. I know that I'm no more likely to talk my (very) religious mother out of her beliefs than she is likely to convert me to hers. It's just about agreeing to disagree sometimes.
Why do people prefer to believe lies about God?

It’s very simple. Because you are talking about this site and perhaps you do not understand that on this website and mainly Society and culture religion and society section majority of the people in fact are atheists. I would say at least 8 out of 10.Now that is a different question why they became atheists as almost all of them were once Christians. However if you are interested in knowing the reason then there are so many threads here explaining that.

So I would not call it lies but their opinion and as they believe in their own opinion then they are super quick in talking and expressing that whenever an opportunity arises. Nothing more than that.
you are right keyplus, it is just opinions.
I am fine with it being a comfort for people but I am not going to quietly stand back and let the deeply psychopathic philosophy of religion be passed on to another generation of people without a word of criticism. Religion has relied on brutal supression of all criticism for millennia and it is over.

The religious insist on tolerance which I fully support. However they pretend tolerance means that we should not make criticisms of a weird philosophy they try to portray to the young as a perfectly fine way to live. Not going to happen.

They want respect. Sorry but I cannot respect what is essentially a form of facism where complete universal compliance by all is the stated goal.

I do not perpetrate a lie when I tell that the concept of a coming Armageddon is the cherished future of the half of the planet that subscribes to the Abrahamic group of religions.

In this scenario the greatest massacre is the history of humanity results in the toal dominance of a particular flavour of monothism and everyone else dies.

The Christians have the return of Jesus and a world where "The Lord" rules everyone. Among other things some of the Mohammadens have Jesus coming back and converting. Along with the Jews they all see a glorious future where there version of the Holy Boogieman kills everyone who doesn't comply with their beliefs.

They all believe in their version of yet they can't all be right. At least a billion people are going to be wrong about the outcome.

The sad thing is that, if they have their way, everyone loses, including the other half of the planet's population that doesn't belive in Abrahamic prophecies. Those who don't see this as a positve outcome have every right to openly confront those who say they subscribe to the God of the Bible, Koran, Mein Kampf or any of the other manifestos that claim the rightful place for the judgement of morality lies in a realm beyond the ordinary person in a place where the oligarcy just happens to have the inside knowledge.
China Doll //And it can come across as judgemental when alot of athiests I know seem to prize themselves on being non-judgemental... //

The religious have certainly been judgemental about the beliefs of the non-religious for a very long time. Indeed often at pain of death for anyone who dared to commit what they called heresy.

Atheists have every right to be judgemental about the philosophies of the religious. They have and still do bring so much trouble to this planet, our planet, not theirs to destory because their prophecies say it will.

They tell us it will be destroyed but miraculously restored once the unbelivers all die. They are quite happy to see through the destruction in total faith that once we hit rock bottom that God will come back and fix everything.

Well sorry but I don't see it getting fixed and I am sick and tired of the faithful happily getting on with the destruction.

Anyone who stands up to be counted in these religions is standing up and in effect saying, "Armageddon, bring it on", because these prophecies are the very core of the faith.

The faithful pretend the wicked, vengeful, brutal God of the Bible is not really there. To those I say, "Read the Book". Too many believers know nothing of what they are actually subscribing too. Believe all you like in the lovey-dovey stuff but when you are backing the horrible Hebrew God brought to you by people who would be convicted of Child Abuse and Crimes Against Humanity in a modern world.

This God id in itself, the inspiration of Abraham, a man who was on the verge of the ritual murder of his son. The proof of this God is a relentless onslaught of genocide by those who heard God telling them to massacre every man, woman and child in more then thirty tribes.

These people were psychopaths yet their inspiration is the basis for an exalted philosophy? These people are the last that we should seek as gaudes. They have modern day equivalents such as David Koresh and Jimmy Jones and should be treated the same.

The prevalence of religious notions lies behind what is wrong in the world today. Far from needing more of it we need for these arrogant fools to stop teaching rubbish to the young so that religion can eventually die out and provide an opportunity for sanity.
Who tells you that?! You got some little fella outside your door assaulting your ears everytime you step out? Course you don't! You take on board and think about religion as much as my very religious mother does, and does it bring you any closer to joy and enlightenment? Does it ***... Hence your issues are your issues. And your dogma is pursued with the same religious zeal as those who do believe.

I reserve my most scathing remarks and thoughts for those who shove religion down my throat or use it as some sh!tty stick to beat people with and hold them down. Not for those who just go about their business, you (and others) would lump them all as one and the same; and you would think you're doing them and all the other 'misguided belivers' a big favour by berating, bullying and preaching at them with all the subtlety of a flame thrower your own particular version of the truth... now where have I seen that kind of logic before?!Oh yeah.... organised religion have adoped the same practice for years!

But thank you for providing my examples for me :c)
I discovered this song a few weeks ago. It says everything on my thoughts of religeous practices
