Wedding in rural Russia

In past times, after a wedding in rural Russia (peasants) people on horseback, outside the church, in front of the newlywed couple, did something to chase away the evil spirits and protect the couple. What did they do?

In many East European countries(but I am not sure if happens in Russia) they throw out larhe quantities of Salt to drive away the evil spirits!

Salt is a good try. But it has been clarified to me that they do not throw anything. They DO something.
