"Backing" stitching on a t-shirt

Hi, I've recently stitched a little character onto a plain t-shirt for my daughter, really pleased with it and wanted to start doing it more often. The only problem is, the stitching on the inside of the t-shirt is visible, not very pretty and I'm worried it might rub against her skin or wear easily.

Are there any products available that can be ironed on to the back of the stitching to secure it and prevent it rubbing against the skin? I've seen clothes in Adams, Gap etc. that have a thin gauze material on the back but I have no idea how it's attached or what it's called.

The only thing I've found remotely like this so far are 'stabilisers' that you iron on to the reverse to help keep material straight whilst stitching but this dissolves upon washing.

Any help much appreciated!!!

You could try the lightest weight of iron-on interfacing, however this will detach after lots of washes and is best incorporated with the stabiliser when you do the stitching. Another method is to create the motif separately on a stabiliser so that you stitch it on afterwards, if you get my meaning - almost like a sew-on patch but with nearly all the backing cut away.
