i know a guy who is selling a print of the early Beatles, c1960 with John, Paul, George, and Pete Best, with Pete Best's Autograph signed 1990 for £70 Does anyone think this is a good buy? Is it likely to increase in value? I am a fan of beatles music so I think it would be nicce to have on the wall. It looks genuine and the guy runs a reputable local music shop

You need to be very careful. Such was the demand for autographs that big groups used to have Roadies or other members of the crew do autographs. Some experts can even tell which of the crew 'faked' the particular autograph. Having said that, the Beatles weren't very big in 1960, so they 'could' be genuine. If he's reputable, he wont mind you taking a copy and having it authenticated by a specialist, although this may cost you as much, if not more, than the asking price.

Hello Buddie,
As Pete Best is still alive and performing then the 1990 signature could be genuine. The problem with any autograph is.is it genuine;and do you have concrete provenance. That is some sort of written proof that the signature is really his.Without this all you have is £70 worth of print. If the dealer cannot supply you with dates and provenance I wouldn't touch it.
Roaldo is right when referring to the Beatles,I have seen Brian Epstein(when I was at a party at his house) sign many photos etc as John Lennon, and his assistants signed for the other Beatles.
It has been estimated that if all the Beatles signatures were genuine they would not have had time to perform!
Just be careful, there are lots of fakes out there, and a Pete Best signature is not going to increase much in value anyway.
PS:~I have no doubt the dealer thinks it's genuine, but that proves nothing.

IaP, I await the publication of your autobiography with interest!

So sorry jno,
It would be too erotic, salacious, and downright libellous;given that a lot of the people involved(but sadly not dear Brian) are still alive.
However, for a negotiated sum I could slip you a manuscript copy? LOL

Question Author
thanks you guys. I guess your right, the music shop owner might have purchased it in good faith and think its genuine.
I suspected Pete Best signature, if it is real would not be as profitable as the others. I may take a rain check on this one.!
