What do you think would be the best sewing machine for a textiles student.
It doesn't need to be the best but a kind of standard, good sewing machine, that isn't too difficult to work.

Any suggestions?

LOL I really hope you get a good answer.. but I doubt you'll be seing much of the "normal" tech bunch on this one :)
When I was a Fashion student, and not at college using the Industrials, I completed most of my collection on my domestic Singer Machine.

It worked well enough and was easy enought to thread up and operate. I've had it for over 20 years and still ocassionally use it for hemming curtains etc.
We have a Janome here. Does about 20 types of stitch, came with a couple of different feet (including one for buttonholes) and cost less than 100 new. Have a look for shops which specialise in selling and repairing sewing machines and knitting machines - they will often have second hand machines for sale at reasonable prices and may be able to offer advice as well.
