find out if you're a winner

Why is it now a days there seems to be competitions on near enough every product you buy e.g. ice cream, fizzy drinks, crisp packets?
Not only that what happened to just opening the packet and finding out if you've won, now you have to ring up this telephone number that charge you just to find out that you haven't won.
It does my head in!!! Yes I know I don't HAVE to ring up and I never have but I'm thinking of other people. Think of all the young kids using their mobile phone credits on calling.
It's a rip off

I can never undserstand how they say"no purchase necessary",what are we to do,rip open dozens of packets in the supermarket?

For no purchase necessary (NPN) entries you usually have to send your details by post and a judge opens a pack for you! Probably cheaper to buy a choc bar and I wonder who gets to eat all the opened chocs?
