Can refunds only be given to the value of the current price of an item or the price you paid for it?
For example - you purchase an item for £300 but it is not suitable so you return it the next day. However a 50% off sale started on the day you return it. Should you get £300 back or £150?

I would have thought you are entitled to a refund of the purchase price
It should be the purchase price, if you are enitled to a refund. If it just that you have changed of your mind about the product then I'm not sure you are entitled
i'm not sure on the law - but if you are returning something for your own reasons and its not faulty or broken, then the shop doesn't have to refund you at all.
If they were to refund the full price, they would then be selling it for half as the sale had started so it's not in their interest to do so.

i'd have bargained for store credit at the full price rather than a cash refund of half

Any decent retailer would refund the price you paid without quibble....BUT only for faulty goods. You are not automatically going to get a refund if an article is unsuitable, or you have changed your mind...that depends on the retailer's refund policy.

^^^important bit, there, is with "no proof of purchase"...ie you can't prove that you paid the full price.

Yes, I think in law shops are under no obligation to refund unless the item is faulty. However this was also an online purchase which I think does allow for returns?
Either way, the purchase was from a big high street chain who I have bought and returned items many times before.
When I bought these items there was already a sale on. I returned them promptly and certainly didn’t think there would be a further reduction in price for me to be refunded at a lower amount.
Did you buy online or in the store?
Have you got the receipt?
Why isn't it suitable? Is it as described, fit for purpose and of reasonable quality?
Online - entitled to a full refund, without quibble as long as you rejected and returned the goods in time
If bought on line you have 7 days from day after receipt to return to get full refund including postage as this comes under the Distance Selling laws.

If from shop and you have the receipt, the refund should be as per receipt amount assuming shop will accept for change of mind.

If from shop and no receipt then refund will be at price at point of return again if assuming change of mind.

If faulty I believe a full refund is given provided you can prove date when purchased even if it is only a bank/credit card statement.

You also have certain claims if paid over £100 by credit card and similar rights under debit card if it needs to go that far to possibly get the difference. Worth contacting card provider.
The Distance Selling laws are no more and have been replaced by the Consumer Contract Regs 2015 which gives the online shopper the right to return the goods up to 14 days from receipt of goods if you change your mind.

The refund must be in full.

What is the name of the store? They may have additional return terms which give you longer to return (never less).

I placed the order online on 11th.
It was dispatched on 13th.
I returned it (and have proof of postage) on 17th.

The store is Evans. I phoned them yesterday. It took 25 minutes to get through to talk to someone and when I did she seemed to be out of her depth. After being on the phone to her for over 10 minutes I think she hung up on me! The phone line went dead.
Ever so slightly frustrating :o(
You are without doubt entitled to a full refund.
I find Twitter very useful for making complaints when a phone call has not solved the problem.

I have always receive a refund based upon the purchase price when I had a receipt, however when I didn't have a receipt the refund was at the current price.
If its an online purchase, the company will have all the information about when the purchaser bought the item and what they paid.

Yes!
provided you complied with the distance selling regs, they yes, full refund.
