Any photographers out there? What would be your preference - Canon EOS or something from the Nikon D range? Does either one have much advantage over the other as far as the important stuff is concerned such as lens quality?

Digital Single Lens Reflex (shame the title isn`t able to "do" capitals)

Used a Canon EOS for years, well pleased with it + extra lenses
Can't compare never used a Nikon.

I`ve used Nikon but never Canon. I went to the Wildlife Photographer exhibition a while ago and just about every photo was taken with Canon EOS or Nikon D.
Canon & Nikon are the two 'main' makers although Sony are producing some very good cameras now and I believe make the sensors for Nikon. Which way you jump is usually a matter of whatever suits you best, they all have differences, only real way to tell is to play with them all in a shop. Some people prefer the button layouts on one to the other, some the menu systems. Whichever you choose you're kind of locked into as lenses etc. aren't interchangeable but third party makers such as Sigma make the same lenses in both Canon & Nikon mounts.
I agree with Fitzer - it's really down to personal choice. We do loads of wildlife photography and use Nikon. Other people prefer Canon. Either way it's really important to get a camera you feel comfortable holding and using. If you're a decent photographer you can take decent photos whichever you choose. Have fun and good luck.

Thanks for the replies. There is a good independent camera shop here and they will trade in my old one plus the lenses so I need to get a feel of the cameras there. It will definitely be Canon or Nikon though.
