Suntan lotion

Anyone know where the cheapest place is to buy suntan lotion at the moment? I need a range of factors (including 50). I have access to most shops, just not very big branches of any of them, thanks.

Wilkinson's and Poundstretcher both have reasonably priced suntan lotions and sprays.

Superdrug always have good offers on suncream, I can't tell you what it is exactly this year though.

Avon, usually has deals and is highly regarded by dermatologists....or it was a couple of years ago anyway.

Avon stuff is available on line, often with free delivery.

Hadn't thought of Poundstretchers, will try and get there in the next couple of days (if it ever stops hurling it down, will feel a bit of an idiot with five soggy kids in kagouls buying suntan lotion).

Superdrug is near Poundstretchers so I will have a look. I have an Avon catalogue and it looks a bit pricey (I am always on the lookout for a bargain!).

Have a look in Aldi - it has had good value sunscreen - including factor 50 - but I don't know the 2012 stock/range.

Thanks all - hadn't stopped to think if the cheaper ones actually worked (just presumed that they must have to to pass some sort of test at some stage). Have to go to Asda on Saturday so I will have a look for some.

Superdrug is bogof at the moment I think. Their Solait brand is very good.

Boots own brand is excellent,the after sun has an insect repellent in it.

We're buying ours from Aldi - so far, so good, and a range SPFs to choose from.

I think just about everywhere either does bogof or half-price these days but you do need to check quality (as in jno's link) some well known brands aren't as protective or effective as others.

Boots Essentials range. You`re not paying for fancy packaging or perfume but the sun filter`s as good and that`s the main thing.

Just a word of warning. I thought I'd been very clever a while back when I bought about 16 bottles of sun lotion that Wilkinson's were selling at "75% off marked price". I thought I wouldn't need to buy sun lotion for another two or three years at least. When I was trumpeting my purchase to my neighbour he pointed out that sun lotion has an expiry date on - and mine were about to run out! It appears that sun lotion deteriorates with age then it loses it's effectiveness. I've since thrown most of it out to be on the safe side.

I`m not sure whether the expiry date is just a marketing ploy though. It`s only in recent years that sun lotions have put expiry dates on the bottles. They never used to bother. I have taken 4 year old sun lotion bottles away to really hot places and used them without any problems. I would be careful about some lesser known brands though. I remember when I was home on the SW coast and the local news told about a family of holidaymakers who were on a Cornish beach with their 6 year old daughter. They had a bottle of chemist`s own brand SPF 8 sun lotion. The kid got really burnt and ended up in hospital. When the lotion was sent away for analysis, it turned out the lotion was SPF2.

I only need enough for two weeks but want to take plenty because of the children (and the outrageous price of buying it abroad), thing 1 is very fair and would burn easily. Looks like I will have to visit a few places and see what's what.

I have used some recently 237SJ and it seemed to work. I take your point about marketing ploys as I wouldn't be surprised. My father's had three operations for skin cancer on his scalp though (he was in the airlines and they didn't know the dangers of the sun years ago) so I'm quite careful as a result.

have a look on Amazon too. I get Piz Buin Allergy from there and it's a lot cheaper than in the shops.
