midge killer/repellent

What is the best thing to get repel midges??? In the evenings its so bad we can't even sit out the back (when we get the weather) We live near trees and water which don't help!!!! anyone got any suggestions?

Use Avon Skin so Soft cream, its cheap as chips and the only thing that works for me. You can buy it online too.

I've heard about the effectiveness of the Avon stuff too, but have not used it myself, so cannot comment. What is available form chemists is a spray of essence of bog myrtle (no kidding) which does keep them at bay. Trouble is that it keeps people at bay too...the smell is not too good.
It may only be available in the west of Scotland where people really know about midges.
Another product which I know works is Bens' Insect Repellent Wipes, also available from chemists . The manufacturer's website given on the box is http://www.ardernhealthcare.com.
You can also get midge-repellent outdoor flares to burn from most garden centres.
