It was moved to Saturday 15th as it clashes with Holy Monday, part of Easter. IT's the first time this has happened since around 1940.

Only the religious festivities were moved - parades, national day off and compulsory beer are all today, 17th.
Trust me - it's been a great day off.

And some things in particular are more important (sacred?) and not just the parade of the drinking. The annual dog show was held in Dublin. ( Years ago I innocently asked why their kennel club had got the international show on St Patrick's Day that year,an inconvenient day when hotels were full. This was met with an uncomprehending stare. "It's on that date", came the reply, "because it's always been on that date" ! Silly me: obvious, really! )
