In the water the whale's weight is balanced by the upthrust of the water and the force is evenly distributed over the underside of its body. On land, only the parts of its body in contact with the ground are supported. The whale's body is not rigid enough to withstand this concentration of force, so it distorts, crushing internal organs and the rib cage, making breathing difficult.
In addition to eltelioni's excellent answer.... there is also the burning by the sun and drying out of the skin to consider.
