Cleaning gravestone

Can anyone suggest a way of getting rid of milldew and weathering stains on a gravestone without harming the writing on the stone?

Aggresive cleaning may harm the stone/marble.

Why not try one of those gentle spray-on solutions that they sell for the roof/paths? You simply spray on and let the rain gently wash the gunk off over a certain period. Take a 1 litre garden spray bottle with you once a year and it is done in 30 seconds.
