astronomical question

Hey all you astronomers out there .... a question for you this morning ....

As I looked out of our front bedroom window (due east) at about 4.00 am this morning, there were two stars burning brightly. One was above horizon level and the other quite some way above it, not in a straight line, but a little bit to the right of the lower one. These were very bright, so I assume they are planets, does anyone know what these could be. I should add that the moon was in the west, behind my right shoulder, so to speak.

Hope you can help,

Chox.

Glad to help, I've bookmarked that site for future reference!
You should install this: http://www.stellarium.org/
Venus is always the brightest object in the night sky ( after the Moon of course) and Jupiter is the second brightest.
if you've got a smartphone then get the Google Sky Map app
If you are interested in seeing the International Space Station going over the uk .It is visible again starting this Monday 6th. If you check abot 6 pm each evening on Chatterbank I have been posting on there for a few years now to remind people when it is this way again. Lots of people did not know it could be seen without binos. Whn the sky is clear there has been some marvellous views. You cannot mistake it it comes the exact time I state and glides across the sky. It is brighter that venus at times and it does not blink so you can't mistake it for a plane.
