I'd have thought that cutting anything would have an effect, no matter how small; but that said, cutting is what scissors are for. Use them, and when they are worn out, replace them. Life it too short to go beserk over using things for the purpose they exist.

You can sharpen scissors up by cutting foil.

My hairdresser once told me that you have to get professional scissors MOT'd and it's costs a lot to get them sharpened and ready for it. But I agree that paper blunts scissors. It was one of the first things they warned us against on my fashion design course!

I once bought some pinking shears for cutting glass cloth (for laminating). After cutting about 20 metres of cloth they were completely blunt and unable to cut because the abrasive cloth had worn the cutting edges. Any form of abrasive including mineral fillers in paper will do the same to any scissors. It is a myth that scissors can be sharpened with sand paper. My local hardware shop regularly destroyed scissors by using them for cutting glass paper.
