"Binoculars" can some one explain about the focal length

13:41 on Fri 08/Apr/05

Hello

I have been browsing Ebay looking at Binoculars, I secretly would like to have a "pair?" set so i can gaze at the moon when it shows its self from time to time.

I have seen details like 20 X 50, 10x70 (ment to be powerfull) 10x50.

What do these details mean and my last question.

What is the most powerfull type you can get these days are there real super powerfull ones youc can get.

What is suitable for moon watching,Id like to get a small compact pair, real small but real powerfull.

Any input guys?

Binoculars are rated by magnification and diameter of the objectives ( the large light gathering lens ) so your 20 x 50 relates to a magnification of 20 times and an objective lens 50mm in diameter.

To look at stars and the night sky you need a large diameter objective without too much magnification as this makes the image less bright.

To look at the moon you'll get lots of light so magnification is what you need, remeber though too much magnification and you may not be able to hold it still so you might want one that can be mounted on a tripod.

As with everything size is not all important, some lens manufacturers seem to be able to squeeze wonderfully sharp bright images from really quite small lenses with clever blooming. So if you wonder why a set of Zeiss  10 x 30 are 400 all I can suggest is look through them and see!

Ebay may not be the best way to buy second-hand optics

quite agree scrap ebay ! u may end up pying more than they r worth !

if you realy want to see the moon just get a telescope. true it needs setting up but if you can spend the money it is worth it they r not that expensive nowadays

High power bins are difficult to hold steady , you could need a tripod for them, so I would say dont get more than 10x power.

Secondly find a pair that is most relaxing to hold and relaxing for your eyes , after a few mins of viewing the old eyes tire out
