I couldn't sleep last night so flicked on the TV at about 2.30am this morning and there was a quiz where you had to add the numbers together something like this:

nineteen minus five +
3 + 4 x 2 =
6 - 5 =

the clue was add the numbers

the prize was 54,000 did anyone win and does any one know the answer, people were ringing in with answers which varied from -1 to thousands.

I have submitted in Film & TV also.

sorry nineteen minus five =

Julie
Previous postings about these quizzes suggest that they are one big con. because they never explain the answer and nobody ever seems to win - apart from the t.v. company . The advise given is Don't phone in - save your money .

I didn't phone but loads of people were, they kept saying only 75p to try and guess, and I was still wondering what the answer was but I suppose there probably wasn;t one
Julie Oh there will be an answer and some weird logic to get you there! Let me demonstrate:
Begin by ADDING the numbers as given ie ADD 19 5 3 8 6 and 5 to get 46 (so far I have used 4x2 = 8).
What about the 2 and the 4 separately?
Add those in to get 52.
What about the "nine" of nineteen? Total becomes 61
What about roman numerals?
I can see MI = 1001 and IV = 4. Total becomes 1066
(A good year for a battle!)
Can we also use the individual letters?
I see 3 I's, one V and one M giving another 1008
The final total is 2074.

I'm not saying that 2074 was the answer they had in mind, but it could have been!

Keep your money and steer clear!

Crofter ..... O M G, no wonder I couldn't work it out especially that time of the morning, I will read a book next time and leave the TV off.

Thanks
also be aware that they charge 75p for the call, not the time you are on the phone..

this works in their favor as their answer service ony accepts a mimimal amount of callers waiting on the line... anyone else ringing gets a message saying try again, you have been charged 75p for an engaged message!

also i believe they keep you on the line for so long its common to hang up and give up..

if your portable phone battery dies, or you hang up, that call seems to stay in the queue, meaning that knowone is waiting to be put through, and knowone can get through

the jackpot rounds after the inital quiz are stupid too, one of them had 3 pieces of card,

one with a number on up to 31, one with up to 12 one with a 4 digit number starting 19XX

if your birthday was the same as the numbers, you won 50,000... how the hell is your birthday gonna be written on the card.... it has to be the day of your birth not your 1st 5th or whatever, the actual day you were born..

they do actually stop you from calling after a while,

they have a 500 calls a month cap for any individual phone number 500*0.75 OUCH!!

Daave ... this is so unbelievable, if all this is happening and people getting charged so much why do they keep calling, it must be adictive especially in the small hours of the morning.
Hi Julie B123. I posted a similar question on the 22/9/06 (because I didnot see Your post) and got lots of replies and advice. This is the second time I have seen this question on the Mint ~ I know now its a con (I admit to ringing 3 times) and not getting through to give an answer ~ BUT, the fact still remains this puzzle is driving me mad!!! I would love to know what the "accepted Correct Answer" is ~ if yourself or anyone finds out please post again in the future. Thanks.
