Unsure of the answer to the last one 12a Bright and pleasant cry of approval unknown C?E?R? is it cheers or cheery - can anyone help please?

You cry Cheers, you don't cry Cheery! - I'd go for Cheers.
cheery = cheer(cry of approval) + y(unknown in algebra)

Many thanks boxtops and bibblebub I think I'll go with cheery as the cry is a cheer and the y is the unknown. Just seemed so ambiguous.
the definition: bright and pleasant = CHEERY

the subsidiary: cry of approval = CHEER, unknown = Y

(imho doesn't seem ambiguous)
Agree - CHEERY. Very straightforward I would have thought, if you remember unknowns are 'x' or 'y' usually in cryptics.
