surely Christiana the water would just merge in the barrell.
So why not freeze one of the jugs then there will be a block of ice and water

put food colouring in one freeze both jugs and put in barrel you'll have two blocks of ice that you can tell apart

Can't you just leave the water in the jugs and stand the two jugs as they are at the bottom of the barrel. Presumably the barrel is empty?
