dt sat £500 prize crossword

I'm puzzled about 46a 'Get the better of': It would appear that depending on which dictionary you look at , either outrun or outgun fits the clue. Suggestions anybody ?

I put 'Outrun - Chambers has...

outrun - "...to get the better of..."

whereas I saw 'Outgun' to be more specifically firearms-oriented (?)
