Skeleton Crossword

How do other people fill in the blank squares to finish off the crossword? I put squiggles, my neighbour puts crosses and another leaves them blank. Is there a proper way to fill them in.

I`m sad to say i fill them in meticulously with a black marker dont dare think what that says about me. LOL
