I seem to remember this answer appeared in the same crossword a couple of months ago and the setter didn't know the diffence between the singular and the plural that time!
From WordNet (r) 1.6 : cognoscenti n : an expert able to appreciate a field; especially in the fine arts [syn: connoisseur]
doesnt that mean it could be either singular or plural, as it says 'expert'.
