...says world-leading air crash investigator, Larry Vance. An Australian-led search for the missing jet has focused on an area of the ocean floor 2,000km (1,242 miles) off Australia's west coast. The zone was selected based on the theory the flight was running on autopilot after veering off course. But an official co-ordinating the search effort told 60 Minutes the wreckage could be outside that search zone, if someone had been in control of the plane when it crashed.

I wonder if we'll ever know what happened?

It may take years. Different models have suggested different places many miles apart. It could have fallen anywhere within an area covering millions of square miles and in some places the ocean is miles deep.
With no telemetric data and no survivors and in consideration of the depth of the ocean, I would imagine it might be many many years until we find out the truth, if ever.
yes i believe it was under control and flown into the ocean , not fallen out of the sky
if the captain did what he now seems to have practised on his home simulator as reported i the press ,he could have brought this 777 down to landing speed of around 140 / 160mph and if the ocean was calm the i would suspect only the engines would have been ripped of the rest mostly if not all intact and could have sunk as so, hence very little debris,,just my opinion of course. i do read all public inquiries on aircraft accidents it always been an interest to me

Bad enough an accident, but a controlled descent doesn’t bear thinking of. How terrifying for the passengers and crew.
I don`t know - it seems a bit iffy to me. If he was going to fly it into the ocean why fly on for miles and miles before doing it? Why not go straight in? What did he do with the F/O - bump him off? Wait until he went to the loo then lock him out? Surely if he did that he would want to ditch it straight away - would he have managed to fly on for miles with the F/O and other crew trying to batter the door down? Or did he tamper with the air con and render everyone comatose whilst staying on oxygen himself? Seems a bit far fetched.
Agree with 237SJ - it might have happened but it doesn't make much sense.

So... No, I don't think we will.

(But I don't think the passengers would have been any the wiser.)
Oh my god what a way to go. Wasn't the passengers aware that this was happening? No phone calls, text messages or videos uploaded online as they realised the plane was going lower and lower and was going to crash?

Seems very strange and I as usual won't believe what the media are TOLD to tell us as usual to throw us off the real scent.

Use your heads folks, things like this just don't happen.
Olivio - there`s no mobile signal in the middle of the ocean
Question Author
Jno, if the plane was descending the passengers must have been aware of it. The expert seems to think there is no doubt it was deliberate.
The expert thinks it was deliberately ditched because of the damage to the trailing edge of the flap. That`s all he`s basing his theory on.
237SJ yes there is as the satellites are above you circumnavigating the globe all over the place. I've had full signal in the middle of the Atlantic and the Pacific!
Olivio - mobile phones get their signals from land, not satellites. If you have ever accidently left your phone on when flying to the States you might get a "Welcome to Telecom Ireland" or whatever it`s called but that will be it. There`s nothing after that.
"Olivio - there`s no mobile signal in the middle of the ocean"

One can, in a pinch, fashion a booster from a tinfoil hat allowing communication with the mother ship.
Question Author
237SJ, but he says the damage couldn't have occurred in any other way.
I`ve tried that Douglas but it didn`t work!
And what were you doing with your mobile switched on Olivio you naughty girl. We are supposed to have them on Aeroplane Mode up there.
Or were you on a cruise ?
Naomi - who knows? Maybe something happened and they realised they had to ditch so they configured the flaps for landing but were then overcome and the plane flew on until it ran out of fuel and glided down neatly. The old expression "Aviate, navigate communicate might have come into play. Maybe that was why there was no Mayday. After all, the Air France (out of Brasil) didn`t get time to call a Mayday
