My mum moved to York a year ago and she's struggling to make new friends and meet people. She's only 60 years old and single but has no real hobbies and has become a bit set on her ways. She didn't want to move but ill health made it necessary.

I've signed her up to local cinemas and libraries and suggested short courses etc to try and get her to meet people but to no avail.

She wants to meet people but I think has got so used to spending time alone.

Any ideas of any groups/clubs/websites etc that I can suggest to her? I think once she meets someone it will spur her on

Thanks Tonyav
What did she used to like doing when she was active?

Not much to be honest ladybirder, she's been disabled most her adult life and a single mum. She looked after us and that's about it. She had a lot of close friends where she lived but she doesn't see them often as she doesn't drive.
Google 'volunteering York' - seems to be loads of different things on offer.

Thanks Sherrardk - have the info ready for her and hoping it will help her, thank you
that's not easy, greedyfly, can I suggest something like contacting the Lions, Rotary, or a society linked to her disability so they know she is there.....the latter two can be wonderful in providing visitors.

Thanks Dt, I will check them out. She is able to leave the house etc on her own steam I just think shes lost her drive to
that's not easy, any trusted confidants/relatives that you can call on in the York area?

No one, my sister lives away and it's just me in the area. We spend time together but there's only so much I can do. I appreciate the ideas guys, will take a look and try to encourage her to take the leap.
Have you checked out meetup.com? Maybe there is something on there that she might be interested in.
to some extent, know the problem but very different circumstances..... anybody from the next generation on (my gen as I am the same age as her) that you can encourage them to take out for lunch (or breakfast)?

For example, we have a couple of cafés here in Truro that are are great for mingling and networking.....I have just gained a commission off one contact for a drawing that way, a really nice guy who wants to get the drawing and prints of the family house, an old Cornish long-house - in which his daughter is now installed, as a pressie for her!

Thanks all!! Much appreciated.

Just don't want her to end up being a lonely old lady (quite a way if me yet) but it creeps up on you!

Off* not if me - damn autocorrect
The local library may well have useful information about groups and activities that would be suitable for her .. also worth asking about any community transport schemes for the disabled.
Are you sure she doesn't prefer it that way?
