Why are the police and social services back peddling on this activity, will it take a toddler being physically harmed before they act?

It says in the article, and one can only hope it is true, that further enquiries are being made into identifying the child and ensuring that s/he is safe and well.

However, the practice of performing exorcisms is a barbaric and backwards one and has no place in any society of 21st Century.

from what I read, it seems most Brits believe children to be instruments of the devil, so I'm surprised this isn't a lot more widespread.

It's well known in demon expelling circles that all the early morning chanting in the world will have no effect on devils, imps, hobgoblins and other supernatural entities unless the exorcist is a member of the Christian church (Rome division) and a card carrying member of Expel, their trade body.
Any fool knows that the carrying of umbrellas indicated an amateur approach to the operation as the open gamp can trap the fleeing spirit allowing it to be transported to the owner's home and for the whole thing to start over again.

PLEASE, leave demonic expulsions to the professionals
