Have managed most of this crossword but am a little confused by 16 down:

Cheer for English resort in report

I have _r_g_t_n and am sure that the answer is Brighton or brighten but am not sure which or why!

All help gratefully received!

Brighton
sounds (report) like brighten which cheers
CHEER = to brighten up/ to cheer up
ENGLISH RESORT = Brighton
IN REPORT = this means 'how the word sounds/how it is reported'
so: Brighton is an English resort, but it sounds like (is reported as) brighten, which is another word for to cheer up or to give cheer to.
Brighton is therefore the answer. I rest my case.
Brighton
'in report' means they sound the same, so 'brighten' for cheer sounds like Brighton.
brighten = cheer
sounds like (in report) Brighton
-- answer removed --
I'd go for brighten- i think the convention is for the definition to be either at the start or at the end rather than in the middle.
