A cryptic clue

The clue is: Doctor returning to northern college (6) I have G?R?O? and have put in GORDON, but I don't see why.
The DR is a doctor returning. Northern is N. But where does the rest come from? Moreover, is Gordon a northern college?

gir to n college cambridge?
If the N comes from Northern then I think it could be any college rather than a northern one, but I haven't heard of it. I think there may be another answer
