I have almost completed the grid but infuriatingly am stuck on 1 down ?a?l, and 28 down c???. I can see that the theme must be to do with balls but the connection with the two unclued words eludes me.

puzzled by 13D - shouldn't 'broadcast' be 'sow' not 'sew'?

No 13d has to be SEW (broadcast)about CR (credit/book entry)

= SCREW to add to DRIVER (23d) to make a cocktail

but 'sew' doesn't mean broadcast - it means stitch or drain. 'sow' is the spelling for sowing seeds.
