Thanks to Abers who are trying to help me. I think the setter has made a mistake typing "stains".Maybe I'm wrong and somebody will come up with an answer.

Hi,douglas9401 sorry to be so long in answering but I've been away for a few days' break.I think your suggestion may be a wee bit convoluted but I'll keep it in mind. I thought the setter perhaps meant to type "stays" ( an old-fashioned type of corset!!)
