I reckon 16d has to be EAR but 15a is LEATHAN (loch).The E in ear is where the second A in Leathan is. What word for LUG can be A _ R.

Lug must be ear. There is a Loch Lethen.

Thanks for trying to help but answer is 7 letters anagram of "ane halt"
Also Lethen is near Findhorn where as clue states lochs near Lochgilphead and Portree and Leathan fits exactly. The R in ear is correct coming from FIRM . celtic and Rangers are sometimes called "The Auld __ __ __ __ "

Google Loch Leathan and it will gve you one in Skye and one on Argyle as per the clue and the anagram.
