Is it Bombay? It fits but not quite sure of explanation. Im taking it that the ay = yes and that ton has some reference to Bomb - Someoine put me out of my misery as this is the last one!

I was old enough to remember REM!

Yes the answer is Bombay
yes - I put Bombay. I presumed the wordplay was equating "doing a ton" with "going like a bomb".
20d Foreign city once offered ton? Yes (6) - before anyone says "what's the clue !!

My reading was the same as yours - which doesn't mean I like it !!

By the way - was that old enough or young enough to remember REM ?
Im young enough/old enough to know of REM (I have all their albums) :-)

Thanks all

BigDave my musical education started in the 70's, lets go for young enough as that sounds better!
I was lucky - mine started in the fifties, so it includes Elvis, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddy, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Brenda Lee, The Everley Brothers, Roy Orbison .......

With all of those, you need no others, and REM were far too late for me !!
BigDave ... I also have a number of recordings by most of those artists ... particularly Brenda Lee, who I was lucky enough to have seen in concert on three occasions.
I too saw her at least three times - at the Granada (Tooting) in 1962, on tour with Gene Vincent being the first !!
