EV 818 A Universal Truth by Warbler

Here is this weeks Enigmatic Variations

To any EV solver!

I am undertaking the statistics for the Telegraph EV. This is because several people find the timeframe until submission too short and in my opinion there have been some crosswords harder than the listener. It would be interesting to see these statistics and depending on the results may influence this timeframe.

I could never reach the echelon of J Green and it must be stressed I don't submit the EV and never will do. So I have no interest other than seeing how we fare.

E-mail a scanned copy/reconstructed typed grid or a list of the answers with the info of the required theme to midazolamev@yahoo.co.uk by 6pm on the Wednesday after the EV (i.e. last post). However please e-mail me whenever you have finished as they will be invaluable to the statistics.

Just use any alias and not your name (if you don't want to) or home address. As we generally do with the listener threads – hints and tips only on the threads. Comments are most welcome and I will copy this every week, so spread the word.

Regards Midazolam

Yes, thanks for the link, Midazolam.

This shouldn't prove too troublesome for most EV solvers.
I hope they're not making them easier just so that people can get them in on time!

Question Author

yes wasnt too bad once the theme was got (the two unclued lights gave the game away early on), but the misprints made it more of a challenge

Apologies to Novalis and Ulysses for not replying to their posts giving me further help on that 'impossible man - Mr O'. Unfortunately the EV had had to be abandoned even earlier than usual because those nasty little deadlines had sneaked up again and Seven had begun its journey through various hands to the Outpatients Dept.

You will all be relieved to know that I am trundling along quite happily this week with about 1/2 done (nowhere near your standard M & N) but haven't had any flashes of light re the title.......aah well! Plod, plod plod.................

I think you two should have a special grid with only every other clue actually printed, that should slow you down a bit!

Personally, I didn't find the puzzle's title any help at all but that might be just me.

What would prove helpful, though are the two unclued lights which give the name of a well-known writer, the surname being the shorter word.

Belatedly (have only just checked) thank you for your suggestion Rapparee I had found it, the title didn't mean much to me until I had found the quotation and then it sort of made sense being the author it was!
