Is it ok to let someone use your internet connection and password when they come to your home to do a presentation on their own PC?

Or is it a bit risky?

How much do you trust them ?

I'm unsure why they need your WiFi to do a presentation at your home. Can't they just show you from their laptop ?

He was a salesman and asked if he could use the Wi-Fi connection, presumably to access a web page.
I don't think it could cause a problem unless he were to then use your password to do a presentation to neighbours or sit in his car outside your house and stream films/porn. You can change our password as a precaution

How do I do that please, FF? I gave him the wireless key from the card on the back of the router.

He said it wouldn't connect and after three tries, he used his own mobile.
As the salesman he should have used that first !

You need to go to the modem management page. There should be an address in the manual, or if not do a websearch for the make of modem you have. It will give you an address in the form of 4 numbers with full stops between them. You type that into your web browser address box. If you get the page up be sure you change only the password and keep a note of what you changed it from and to.
I wouldn’t agree to it and would never dream of asking. If you go to your service provider’s website, there should be instructions for changing your password.
I'm sorry to say Tilly but I fear you have been conned & would suggest you contact your wifi supplier & get things changed.
It's possible you gave him the wrong number if he tried 3 times and failed to get onto your modem. Did you give him the serial number or the model number ?
I don't see why Tilly has been conned. He can't access it again unless he is very close by.
Tilly- i can't remember how to change my home wifi password
I only give out my wi fi password to family and trusted friends, no one else.

The presentation should already have been on his laptop.

It was the wireless key that he typed in. He had the card in front of him.

What can happen........?

Do I need to contact BT?
I doubt that there is an issue. No BT does not need to be involved. For peace of mind you can change the modem password. As mentioned you need the address to type into the web browser address box. And you need to be careful what you change when the screen comes up, and note everything you change just in case. Other things you have that presently connect wirelessly will need the new password.
The card with the wireless key on it, does it also have the 'router' log in details on it as well? Some do.

No need to contact BT, just log in to your router and change the wi fi pass word on their and obviously make a note of what you changed it to. I f your router log in was also on the card, I'd change that as well.
"their" should be "there", sheesh ☺☺☺
"What can happen ?"

Well not a great deal since you know he wasn't doing anything while you were there.

As ff mentioned, it is technically possible he could return in his car and park outside yours where he can pick up the modem signal and visit places the authorities would be interested in, and which seems to be you. (Plus use up your allowance of course.)

Chances of that being worth his while or even something he'd want to do, is extremely minimal.

SA, I don't know how to log on the the wireless router.......sorry for being thick!

So, there is no danger of my internet banking website being seen, or anything like that?

I am hopeless!

No- unless he installed something on your PC while he was there or has some software on his PC for seeing what's on your screen while he sits outside in his car
This might help.

Once you have logged in you should be able to find an option to change the wi-fi password (make a note). After that you may have to change the passwords on any devices using your wi-fi , ie; laptop, printer, mobile, tablet, etc.
It really is nothing to worry about.
Question Author
I've managed to change the admin password but am getting mixed up about the wireless key number. It was the wireless key number that he was trying to use, not the admin. password.

Thank you all for your help, so far.
