Whats your experience of hospital food been like?
Just got back from visiting my old mum in hospital and have had to take her some 'snacks' as she finds the food unpalatable.
Personally, Ive had no complaints about hospital food when Ive been there. My last taste of hospital food was 2 yrs ago in a psych ward and the food was exceptional. A good choice to choose from and a full English breakfast at the weekend. Obviously my mums in a different hospital (and expected to there for the next 2 weeks) but just isnt eating the 'muck' (as she refers to it).
Are some people just to fussy and set in their ways about what to eat (especialy the elderly) or IS some hospital food just muck?
Thanks.

Just done 11 days in Hospital , the food was O K but very little of it. Tiny portions I lost nearly a stone.
Ive experienced hospital food, I wouldn't give it to my dogs!! Tiny little meals and taste bland and boring, I think it also depend on what you would normally eat at home, I certainly would never eat anything like that at home!
I often wonder how people are supposed to recover in hospitals when they feed this muck!!
When Carakeel was in hospital, I took her food into her.
Hospital food isn't supposed to fill the discriminating patient with delight. It's just supposed to keep him alive until the next bit of medical treatment. For gourmet meals, go to a gourmet restaurant.
I have always held the opinion that a hospital should not confused with a hotel.
last time i was in the food was fab - soup or arange juice to start each meal, then a choice of hot dishes or salad/sandwich, pudding (hot with custard or ice cream) Cheese and biscuits, extra portiins of cake.biscuits. Great.
unlike my spelling
I'm not worried about the food , the medical treatment was 1st class , saved my life.
I expect the food to be moderately palatable, it just wasn't, some of it was unrecognisable!!

If I ever go in to hospital, I would not eat it!
pretty terrible

I lost 500g a day ( half a kilo ) until I went from 110 kg to 75 kg ( lowest )
and my brother commented - you have a chance of dying from this weight loss alone without anything else

and I said I know

terrible time of my life
Awful (and this is from my last experience here in France!). I lost weight.
There was a series where James Martin went into Scarborough hospital and turned the food around. A lot of the problems were with the waiting times. The food was fine when it left the kitchens, but by the time it reached the patients....!!!!

We are moving to the catchement at Scarborough Yaaaaeee! :o)
Surprisingly good, wide range of choices through the days menus and from day to day. My only grumble was that the salads were like relics from the 70's, i.e. lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes wedges, protein of the day.

Not a very good advertisment for hospital food so far.

EDDIE //I'm not worried about the food , the medical treatment was 1st class , saved my life.// What was up with you if you dont mind me asking?
Dreadful. When I was in the food was served hot from a heated trolley tasted nice, but we all went down with food poisoning! Last time I was in I lost half a stone after 5 days (couldn't eat it).
When daughter had her children, we took takeaways for her. When daughter in law had her first, she came home after 6 hours and called at the 'chippy' on the way home!!!
Have stayed in two different hospitals, my local hospital food was lovely, the London hospital food was dire, didn't even recognize what it was, so mixed reviews from me.
Fresh out of hospital on Friday ... the only thing missing off the menu was the wine list.
Truely excellent food, freshly prepared and hot. No complaints whatsoever.
At my local hospital you get given what the previous occupant of your bed ordered before discharge. After 24 hours you get to choose. Not much of an improvement. If you are fasting before an operation and the operation is cancelled after being postponed for a few hours there is no way of being fed before the next scheduled meal.

does seem to be a bit of a lottery then whether you get 'eatable' food or rubbish?
Apart from what i said in my original post (re: psych ward food) my previous experiences of hospital food has been ok, no complaints. Must have been lucky so far. My poor mum cant stomach anything at the mo that shes given.
