12a A silent start to grate and grind (5) I've seen this answered as both gnash and anise. Anybody any suggestions as to which (if either) of them might be correct/why? I can't make sense of them!

Gnash (grind) - start of 'g(rate)' is silent in 'gnash'
I would say gnash (the g is silent)
perhaps a bit more:
g (start to grate)
'n' (and)
a sh(ush) a silent
