Can I clear up some confusion about 16a.....Will perhaps trade francs for lira"

I think this must be SELL, substituting the F in SELF for L, but I have seen it answered as SELF. Need to walk down to the postbox !

I would agree with 'sell' for the reason that you have stated.
Self - sell(trade) with f(Francs) replacing l(Lira)
Could it also refer to Will Self (the writer)

I still think its SELL. The Sunday Times don't post ambiguous clues like this very often though.
^I agree with Danny
Self
It is difficult. You could make a case for either answer IMO.
Will perhaps is the definition so Self is the answer.

Perhaps TRADE is the definition, thus giving SELL as the answer !
If Sell were the answer the definition would be trade. In a properly compiled cryptic crossword the definition comes at the beginning or the end of the clue, never in the middle.
But definitions aren't usually in the middle of a clue, but at beginning or end. For that reason I go with danny's answer and explanation
Definition is at start or end of clue, not central.

I vote Self.
Good answer BlackadderV ;-))
I agree with Mamyalynne, I make will the definition.
